How a company gets on this list

  1. 1

    Start from the public record

Every listing begins as a company's own Google Business record in Illinois.

  2. 2

    Keep the real ones

Open companies with at least one Google review stay. Duplicates are merged.

  3. 3

    Read their website

We read each company's own site for the materials and services it says it offers.

  4. 4

Say when we do not know

If the website does not say, the listing says "call and ask". We never guess.

No company pays to be listed, and no company can pay to change its rating or its place in the ranked list. Paid spots exist, and every one is labeled Featured on the card.

Owners can claim a listing to correct details or add their own photos. A person checks every claim. How listings are compiled.

Before you hire a deck builder in Illinois

Pick the material first. Not every builder works with every material. 147 builders on this site say they build in wood and 200 say they build in composite. Choose the material, then call the builders whose own website confirms it. On every town page you can tap a material to narrow the list.

Plan on a permit. Illinois leaves deck permits to each city, village and county. Many towns ask for a drawing of the deck and a plat of survey, and several inspect the footing holes before concrete goes in. Rockford, Naperville and Elgin all set footings at 42 inches. See the rules for your city.

Make sure someone calls JULIE. JULIE names building a deck as a project that needs underground lines marked. State law puts the call on whoever digs the footings, at least 3 days ahead, not counting weekends and holidays. The call is free. If your builder digs, the builder calls. Ask.

Get it in writing. The Illinois Home Repair and Remodeling Act covers work on your home and names porches. On any job over $1,000, the company must give you a written contract to sign before work starts, with the total cost and materials listed, plus the state's consumer rights pamphlet.

Ask for proof of insurance. Illinois does not license general contractors at the state level, and towns set their own rules. Some require contractors to register. The state does require home repair companies to carry liability insurance unless they have a net worth of $1,000,000 or more. A certificate of insurance takes them a minute to send.

Don't pay it all up front. The Attorney General's advice is never to pay in cash or by Venmo or Zelle, and never to pay in full until the work is done. Be careful with anyone who knocks on your door with a deal.

Frequently asked questions

How are deck builders listed here?

Every listing starts from the company's public Google Business record. We keep companies that are open, have at least one Google review and build decks. Then we read each company's own website and mark which materials and services it says it offers. When the website does not say, the listing says so instead of guessing.

Do companies pay to be listed?

No. A basic listing is free and stays free. Companies can pay for a featured spot at the top of a town page, and every paid spot is labeled Featured on the card.

Do you check licenses or insurance?

No. We do not verify licenses, insurance or the quality of anyone's work. Ask for a certificate of insurance and check with your town's building department before you sign. Almost every Illinois town requires a permit for a new deck.

My company is listed and something is wrong. How do I fix it?

Use the Claim link on your listing, or email hello@deckbuildersillinois.com. We fix corrections and honor removal requests within the week.
