Deck builders working in Des Plaines apply for a Residential Decks building permit, and the city takes those applications online in its Customer Self Service Portal. The city requires permits for certain construction projects, and a deck is one of them. The page has 40 deck builders for a city of about 59,156 residents. Three are based in Des Plaines itself: Chicago Luxury Decks, Malik Porch & Deck Builders and Lumbra Deck Builder & Porch Builder. The rest come from the north and northwest suburbs and from Chicago.
The city asks for real drawings. A plat of survey or site plan, drawn to scale, shows the deck, its distances to all property lines and the material underneath. Construction plans must show framing, connections, elevations, stairs, handrails, guardrails and footing sizes and layout. A foundation supports plan shows pier size and spacing. A builder who handles permits can prepare these papers with you.
Two rules shape how a Des Plaines deck is built. Postholes must be 42 inches deep if the deck is attached to the house, or 12 inches if it is free standing. A deck may extend no farther than 12.5 feet into the required rear yard, and no farther than 3 feet into required side and corner side yards. Both are worth raising when you compare designs.
The three local names have different strengths. Chicago Luxury Decks builds from a Des Plaines base and works in Chicago and the North Shore. It specializes in composite and PVC decking, rooftop decks and garage-top decks, and its showcased projects include a TimberTech PVC garage rooftop deck. It is rated 5.0 from 36 reviews. Lumbra Deck Builder & Porch Builder makes custom decks and porches, with screened or covered options, and it is rated 4.8 from 22 reviews.
